It means remove the packages that contain old kernel versions by running

  sudo apt-get autoremove

Right, and that leaves older kernel packages still installed and using
up disk space.

Each kernel version gets a new package name, so you could install it in
parallel with each other.  (This is unlike most other Ubuntu packages.)
