I also have suggested the same thing - other distros include pre-built
kernel modules for their live media which means virtual machine
testing is much easier to do and, as you say, performance is vastly
improved. Not only does this provide a much better first impression it
makes life easier for those who use virtual machines, either for
development or just for testing. There's no need for DKMS, and
installing/updating the modules later via DKMS works fine. I'm pretty
sure Ubuntu could have a similar setup.
