That's like saying we have the equivalent of MS Office. We don't. We
have text editors, highly professional systems like LaTeX, and a the
somewhat-adequate OO.org, but neither is really satisfying as a MS

In the backup space we have the complex professional systems that don't
really work for non-expert desktop users, and we have total crap like
sbackup which does not even satisfy modest requirements such as having
the option of not gzipping huge media files. And deja-dup is also too
simplistic in my desktop experience.

Our best bet for a good desktop backup system is "Back in Time", but
that's not even installed by default and has rough edges, too.
I agree very much with the OP that Ubuntu should have an excellent
desktop backup tool installed by default, ideally integrated with
UbuntuOne if the user wants offsite backup, and frankly I am amazed that
it still doesn't (but leadership finds the time to mess with CSD)
