Saw this recent post about switching from totem-video-thumbnailer to ffmpegthumbnailer and receiving a massive boost of speed:

I notice that thumbnailing is very slow in Ubuntu, and this is a massive improvement, so I think it's probably at least worth investigation. Just a thought, Rich
