I don't know these Chinese Loongson chips, how do they compare to to
MIPS R5000 and R4000? I'm owning 2 SGI Indys only one of these is
currently running Debian/sid (moved the 32Mb memory from the r4k box
to the r5k one). Both machines are too slow to run anything like
gnome or kde on, I'm in the process of evaluating xfce now.

I'm new to Ubuntu too so I can't answer your question but I think you
might follow the lines Debian is using.
