This was actually a mistake on my part, I had never seen Rythmbox work
properly with iPods and some other articles I saw indicated that
Rythmbox only read from iPods.   This turned out to be old data and
the issue with my iPod was that I needed to remove all the music and
add it back for it to work.

My intent was to suggest a way to get iPod support out of the box, but
it is now obvious that only MY iPod wasn't working out of the box and
others worked. ;-)
