FWIW, it's also what Darwin uses (and NextStep before it used) for the same purpose. <http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Darwin/Reference/ManPages/man1/open.1.html> Whatever the word chosen, I think prepending "gnome-", "xdg-", or anything like that is exposing an irrelevant implementation detail.
