I can confirm this problem on my hardy system. This is on FF3.0.1 as bundled with Ubuntu 8.04, using openjdk-6-jre 6b11-2ubuntu2 and icedtea- gcjwebplugin 1.0-0ubuntu5.
When doing the steps above I also get the certificate trust screen, click on Run and nothing happens, just a grey rectangle with the FF status bar saying "Start: applet not initialized" at the bottom. On closer inspection this could well be an issue with icedtea- gcjwebplugin though, not openjdk.
