For edification (as I decided to muck around a bit, and not upg to
Intrepid):

>From testing all day, and using what I have learnt in forums, I have
discerned the following:

Ppl using Hardy 2.6.24 -12 or 14 were able to use alsa's 1.0.17 full
release or rc1 drivers with Intel 80281H ICH8 audio with success, either
from simple KMix settings, update of alsa, or by editing modprobe.d
/alsa-base to include 'options snd-hda-intel model=hp/lenovo/asus/auto'
to solve most or all sound issues.

Ppl using 2.6.24-19: while alsa may be update, lspci/lshw/modprobe/etc
showed all relevant pieces (modules and so) installed, and dmesg
provided nothing, malformed audio was achieved. The commonality for
absolutely no sound, reading the forums, was folks on Asus systems,
which points to Realtek ALC861VD being the culprit- doesn't work with
alsa. When I realized this I abandoned alsa (and mercurial) for the
lastest OSS 4.0.1016 drivers...work like a charm! So for anyone not goin
to Ibex Alpha4, waiting impatiently for A5, or needing to rollback...
you might look into this.

Addendum: Installation gaff, but minor and already covered in the forum
