I've had a similar problem, and it turned out somehow the sound settings weren't correct. I can't remember exactly how they were set unfortunately, but I went to System->Preferences->Sound and changed everything to ALSA. Seemed to have done the trick in rhythmbox. The funny thing is I remember rhythmbox working fine to start with and then stopping, so I wonder what happened. Anyway, at least it now works (for me)
