https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.22/+bug/129817 has been helpful, adding generic.all_generic_ide=1 to the kernel params solved the issue and I installed Intrepid, however after I booted into the installed system I couldn't access any CD/DVD, adding "ide_generic" to /etc/modules (as Martin Gros suggests in the above mentioned page) did not help.
