Well, doing as you suggested makes that error go away, but I'm still
unable to use the nvidia driver (any version)

now it just goes to the bulletproof x dialog at startup, but still does
not seem to want to play nice with the nvidia driver and go directly to
the vesa driver instead (???!!!) I think that this is another bug
though, as I've seen others talking about it at ubuntuforums.
