Son, what version are you using? on intrepid version 2.23.90 : if you are logged into empathy, and then disconnect from the internet, and reconnect (such as by dechecking enable wireless in netowrk manager, waiting and rechecking, ...or by reselecting the same network, causing a reconnect) empathy goes offline and then automatically (and within 3 seconds) signs back in again.
a case where something could go wrong is mentioned in this bug: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=539142 where you start empathy before network manager, which means empathy is (currently) unable to detect the change to online.
