Andreas,

Assuming that displayconfig-gtk is what presents the list of screen
resolutions when you select [System],[Preferences],[Screen resolution]
what happens is that after a reboot the resolution options menu no
longer displays resolutions higher than 800x600.

It appears that there is a problem in detecting what the monitor is
capable of displaying, one that didn't exist in 7.10, and which doesn't
exist with other distros I've tried.

For what it's worth:
http://wombatdiet.net/2008/04/24/ubuntu-804-and-the-aten-cs1734b

I don't believe it is a problem with the monitor. It's either the switch
or the software. Other Ubuntu/KVM problems have been reported before
(see http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=547299) and I think
there's a suggestion here (review of a different switch)

http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=aten_cs1782&num=3

that the system could revert to 800x600 when the display is not active
but it happens even if the display is active.

Let me know if I can help (ie things to try).

Cheers,
Paul

w/8.10 alpha 4

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

What happens if you change the display-settings with displayconfig-gtk?
Does the system preserve the settings made there?
