As stated in the message, the problem occurs when installing from CD's
that have been burnt and double-checked.

This was on a Dell Latitude D420 with 1.2GB RAM and lots of hard disk
space.

It is now running Ubuntu 8.04.  In the meantime, I did an upgrade from
7.04 to 7.10 as I suggested.  Only the install from the 7.10 disks
failed.  Every time.

But that was a long long time ago now.
