Also, are these encrypted DVDs (such as ones from the store) or unencrypted (homemade)? If they are encrypted, do you have libdvdcss2 installed? It's not available in the repos for legal reasons, but Medibuntu ( https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu ) has a package available.
