I probably have the same issue. I have a fresh 64-bit Hardy install on a new HP Pavilion with an Intel Quad Core and nVIDIA GeForce 9500. When starting the computer, Ubuntu freezes shortly after the GRUB menu when the splash screen comes up and the progress bar bounces to and fro. This happens mostly when restarting the computer, but sometimes also following a clean start (using the Power button). I disabled the splash screen to catch the associated error messages but there didn't seem to be anything useful. Screenshots of the output are posted in this thread in the Ubuntu Forums: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=897958 (Post #3). I added 'all_generic_ide' to /boot/grub/menu.lst, but the problem persists (although it appears to occur less frequently). Let me know if you need any additional info.
