Since my earlier message, I have had an opportunity to shut down my computer and to shift the Dell monitor cable from the KVM switch directly to the computer.
The ddcprobe failed in exactly the same way as in my last message. My monitor is somewhat older than Andreas Schildbach's. I shall be taking up the matter with Dell. Thanks for providing this extra information.
