The installer caused the problem described in this bug report. 1) uninstall the driver from the NVIDIA installer by stopping the Xserver and typing sudo sh name_of_the_installer --uninstall 2) try to reinstall xserver-xorg-core and libgl1-mesa-glx 3) install nvidia-glx-177 again and see if it solves the problem.
