apologise for the late reply. Actually switching to metacity seems to solve the problem. the menu's become very responsive as one would expect. Although still suprised that Compiz has such a detrimental effect...even on a quad core intel 2.6Ghz with 8GB of ram? evidently so... thank you very much for you post.
