Hi Andreas,

I could not reinstall because the installation disk wants to create
another new partition for the installation with no option of  just
reinstalling over the old installation. I have a 6 Gig drive with Win98
in the other partition and there wasn't room for a third partition. I
didn't want to make a third partition anyway. I was unable to uninstall
the operating system or erase it.

So I got my son involved. He was the one who installed the XFCE in place
of the GNOME. When he did, some things got lost. It is not a good way to
go from Ubuntu to Xubuntu.  He has been poking around in it through the
terminal command prompts and restored most all of what was lost. There
may be a few things left to do, but the update manager worked at least
in the terminal mode. I haven't been able to test it yet in the GUI
since no more updates are called for right now.  He has also restored
the networking capability by filling in the Hosts file and adding
required dependentcies.

If I can make a suggestion or two through you, Ubuntu/Xubuntu should
provide a means to remove the operating system and the partition or
provide a clear and easy means to change from one form of Ubuntu to
another.  Actually, I think both should be implemented. It should allow
skipping creating a new partion. I tried to use Super Grub and
PartionLogic to clean the disk and that didn't work. PartitionLogic 0.69
just wouldn't boot on this computer, though it does on my newer ones.
Also, Fdisk command from Windows didn't do any help and just made Super
Grub necessary to at least allow booting back to Xubuntu. It was
recommended using Fdisk somewhere in a forum as a way to start over and
that should be challenged.

My son programmed in the ability to access my computer through my
router remotely from his home and any little problems should be
straightened out pretty soon.  I can say that my situation doesn't seem
to be covered in the forums and some of the advice I found there was
certainly not all good.   The main reason I am trying Linux is because
of my son's urging, but I would say a few wrinkles need to be ironed
out before it's ready for the general public. Not everyone has someone
as knowlegeable as my son to help with it.

Thank you, Andreas, for checking back on this.

Dave.

Hi! Are there any news on this? Did it work out in the reinstall?

Status in “update-manager” source package in Ubuntu: New

Bug description:
The update manager in stock Xubuntu 8.04.1 that was recently downloaded from
the Xubuntu website hangs immediately after clicking "Install
Updates", will not close when commanded to and is non-responsive. The
window is in gray. Firefox connects to the internet and browses while the update
manager is still stuck, so update manager should not be waiting for internet
response.

System installed on is Packard Bell with 233 MHz Pentium MMX, 256MB of memory,
10-100 ethernet card attached to Linksys WTG54 router and DSL. This is my trial
computer before installing Xbuntu on newer computers.
