I reported bug 226272 some time ago, not realizing this bug was under way. We have very similar symptoms, using very similar hardware and software (though I have experimented with sidux too, and found problems). In bug 226272 I think we found that the flickering stops completely if you disable the DRI module in xorg.conf. However, this can lead to some complete failures of video rendering (e.g. playing a wmv file in ubuntu crashes the desktop, but works OK if DRI is on) and some desktop freezing (e.g. on sidux, not on ubuntu). I am now running a new install of ubuntu 8.04.1 with compiz off (in xorg.conf and desktop prefs) but with DRI on. Fairly stable but still having flashes now and again. Only one black screen in one week of use. Seems that X in Hardy (and recent sidux) is responsible because ubuntu 7.10 and earlier versions of sidux had none of these symptoms. Maybe we will find that the latest version of xorg for intel will solve it, but it would be good to know what is different about that code.
