Sorry for the "me too" but after much searching I found this report. Firstly, am pleased to say shutdown button is now available, after selecting "show actions menu". What worries me is that the button was available before (in 8.04 if I recall correctly) and something had reset a value such that it didn't appear. My machine, a 64 bit AMD / generic desktop with 8.04 Hardy installed.
