Actually it's quite possible. You can install KDE4 applications and they will 
run inside KDE3. :)
All you need to do is install dolphin-kde4 (sudo apt-get install dolphin-kde4) 
and it will install only dolphin-kde4 and the stuff necessary to run it. In 
Dolphin's case, the KDE4 version is more stable and bug-free than it's KDE3 
counterpart, and I would in fact recommend that KDE3 users install dolphin-kde4.

Unfortunately, the KDE3 Dolphin was a Kubuntu fork of sorts from the
original Dolphin. KDE was not at all responsible for it, and it's
original creator went on to port Dolphin to KDE4 somewhat early on. As a
result, the KDE3 version of Dolphin was left to Kubuntu and it's limited
manpower to be maintained. These days it sits untouched, and probably
won't be touched for a while.
