I guess this is somewhat related to python???-minimal related libraries, which kde-guidance depends on. I had the same problem after a minimal install (alternate) of kubuntu 8.04.1, skipping at first the desktop When tried installing with the metapackage, I got the same problem above.
And found a dependencies breakdown with python packages 2.5.2-2ubuntu4.1 The working version is actually 2.5.2-2ubuntu4, shipped with the kubuntu-8.04-*.iso, not the 8.04.1 ... ;-) So I removed the 4.1 version, then installed the v4 by the above iso file, mounted with apt-cdrom add and left alone within sources.list This way I forced the installation of the right python, then # apt-get update && apt-get upgrade && apt-get install kubuntu-desktop worked like a charm... :-D Hope this helps.
