the same thing happens in firefox 3.0b5 on ubuntu 8.04. Firefox freezes and so does thunderbird. I turned off a whole bunch of plugins and the problem vanished.
I have flash plugin enabled and a vlc plugin enabled. And this is working fine. I turned off a) default plugin, b) demo print plugin for unix/linux c) divx web player d) Helix dna player; realplayer G2 e) itunes application detector f)quick time plugin g) totem web browser plugin 2.22.1 h) windows media player plugin 10 (from totem 2.22.1) I am not quite sure how I got that many plugins. Probably from a recent installation of codecs for totem player.
