    here you have it:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ sudo ls -l /dev/disk/by-uuid
[sudo] password for fabman:
ls: no se puede acceder a /dev/disk/by-uuid: No existe el fichero ó
directorio
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$

The Spanish in it means: No such file or directory

So, it looks like my system doesn't have the by-uuid file in /dev/disk
