Sorry man Ubuntu is too new for me, I have no idea how to operate it
like you guys.  A friend gave me this computer with the software
installed.

This is the message I get when I try to upgrade:Software index is broken

It is impossible to install or remove any software. Please use the
package manager "Synaptic" or run "sudo apt-get install -f" in a
terminal to fix this issue at first.

I don't know the password to repair the software myself but I can tell
you I think the damage was cause due to a forced shutdown in the middle
of an update/upgrade.
