It seems as though it is related to the ATI XOrg driver. When using the
ATI driver my screen works well, but when I close the screen it logs
out. I have been torubleshooting the problem and when I use the VESA
driver it does not log me out, but i do have to hit Ctrl+Alt+F1 then
Ctrl+Alt+F7 to get to the "locked computer" screen. This is somewhat
better for me, as logging out stops programs, and at least this is just
a pain.

Also I have noticed that sometimes if I close the lid and open it again
it will say that another program has crashed and it will start another
one. Then instead of using the Ubuntu login GDM, it uses a Gnome login
screen.

Could the Lid Close event be triggering a problem with GDM?

I will try to make this happen again and write down the exact message.
I would also be willing to give any information that would help solve
this problem (dmesg / xorg.conf / etc).
