** Description changed:

I use an a Layla 20 bit sound card 8 in 8 out, also an on board intel
motherboard soundcard. There are no conflicts. When I do a line feed
from a mixing desk, it records, but plays back in high quality thin
sound, almost like the microphone sound you would get when natural
  reverb is recorded.

So the sound source is recorded flat, play back is flat. No effects,
yet it sounds like reverb or hollow.

I am using Ubuntu 7:10, current and up to date on a gygabyte board, CPU
  1.8 Ghz, 1 gig sdram
+
+ Added note:
+
+ Yes it is associated with the onboard chip, as I have yet to send a line
+ feed through the Layla. Under XP everything is okay.
+
+ If I play a CD or DVD using Ubuntu, the sound is broadcast quality in
+ playback. The record side using Audacity, fails and sounds like it was
+ recorded down a hole.

Line recording, sounds like it is down a well. has a very hollow playback. No
effects turned on
