after updating to gnome-panel (1:2.23.5-0ubuntu1) to 1:2.23.6-0ubuntu1
this afternoon the Applications, Places and Sytem menu disappeared. I
added the Main Menu applet so at least I had access to the menus. See
attached screenshot
