Richard Laager: I'm not really sure what it was for. It looks like some form of asynchronous update with events and callbacks to save CPU power vs continued polling. I'm waiting for a response from the gstreamer team at the moment from the bug report I filed at gnome bugzilla. http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=545932 They should be able to clear things up.
