have you done "sudo nvidia-glx-config enable" ? your xorg.conf might require changes which should be made by executing the command specified above. Please attach your xorg.conf and /var/log/Xorg.0.log Make sure the nvidia kernel module is loaded, the command "lsmod" or "sudo lsmod" will tell you that.
