Thank you for looking at it. Unfortunately I cannot add anything to the bug: I don't have that hardware anymore - ended up replacing the laptop with an identical one, but with Intel X3100 integrated graphics - I've had enough of ATI.
Go ahead and close it: not only that video card was rare (and is probably dead), but ATI has changed their stance on OSS drivers since then.
