Jason, Thanks for this workaround: I can now connect to my WEP AP.
FYI: I installed Ubuntu 8.04.1 which only has the faulty software, so you can not choose the older kernel anymore to connect to a WEP AO. Quite a serious Ubuntu bug IMHO.
