I purged and reinstalled nvidia-glx-new as directed, and now the resolution is correct again. Thanks for all the help! Sorry it took so long for me to get back to this.
Now that I re-read your directions, I think I was supposed to type sudo apt-get install linux-generic nvidia-glx - or - sudo apt-get install linux-generic nvidia-glx-legacy But instead I used: sudo apt-get install linux-generic nvidia-glx-new I'm not sure if I used plain nvidia-glx or nvidia-glx-legacy before, but installing -new worked so I guess its ok.
