Update: I've managed to solve my problem (inbox/local folder icons) by
un-checking the "leave a copy of messages on server" option in the
account settings.
As my problem was for the asterisks on the inbox and local folders
icons, not the icon for the listing in the message-list pane, I'm not
sure if my solution will have anything to do with this variant of the
problem but I figured I'd post my results in case the two bugs do turn
out to be related.
