Running evince 2.23.5 on Ubuntu Intrepid has similar results. When I open the document, memory usage spikes to 400 megabytes +. After a moment or two ( once it has loaded the file ) it falls down to less than 20 megabytes. If I resize the window, it spikes again to 400 megabytes and than comes back down.
Because I only have 512 megs of memory, during the spikes it swap thrashes and I have time to see the excessive usage of memory.
