Hi,
I'll accept your comment about the 1024 cylinder limit and older BIOSes. 
However, putting boot below that limit did work. This is an IBM ThinkPad T43 
for reference.

As for how to detect it. The symptoms were that grub gave error messages
when using root. Only rootnoverify allowed me to continue - though not
very far. Therefore, perhaps a detection method would be to see if grub
can read /boot before continuing.
