Tim Gardner's link was a little bit confusing, but I found a package called
linux-image-2.6.24-21-generic_2.6.24-21.41ubuntu1_i386.deb
and uname -r states 2.6.24-21-generic, too, so that one boots fine on the old
P3 Coppermine...

Maybe offtopic #1:
but in dmesg appears rsrc_nonstatic: Unknown symbols
and yenta_socket: Unknown symbols (probably only the audio driver)

Maybe offtopic #2:
and - also I am not sure if it is related - amd64 with mdadm-raids on Kernel
2.6.24-20 have a (recoverable?) segfault.
