I am also affected by this bug. 2.6.24-20-generic halted just after the hlt check. I have an Athlon XP 1500+ on a Gigabyte GA-7N400 motherboard with 1GB RAM.
Tim, I've upgraded to your kernel packages (2.6.24-21-generic etc.) and everything works well, kernel boots and all modules are working as far as I can see.
