I managed to circumvent the problem by setting the USB mode to M/P (Camera Control Pro, MTP/PTP) and importing the images via f-spot. The filenames were lowercase though, but at least I got the files. Adding ircpool to boot parameters as mentioned in http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=558929#postcount3428939 didn't help in my case.
