Hi Chris, No in fact the updates that came along after I'd logged this problem, plus the fact that I re-installed ubuntu, seemed to fix for a while. Then Firefox and Flash pluggin played up after that. So sadly decided I'd had enough re-installing etc that for time being I have given up on Linux solution for my little EeePC Laptop, as it seems LInux just don't really like the hardware at presnt, so I've switched to Windows XP, but I may come back when next version of Ubuntu comes along, by that time the Wireless connection may work (just could not get that to work no matter what I did) also Ubuntu doesn't handle the 800 x 400 screen well, mind you neither did the version of Linux that it was shipped with!).
