confirming this problem. I used gksudo nautilus (to access a log file) and got the same errors as Dean reported. The desktop degraded, showing only generic icons, and became non-responsive. On attempting to re-boot, the graphical greeter failed to appear, and attempting to startx after logging in at CL failed. Tried to launch gdm; that failed too, with permission errors.
