Confirmed Problem. This is not just Kubuntu. Also found in:

Problem does not exist when using to Windows XP SP3
Using either:
- Epson Stylus Photo R320 - CUPS+Gutenprint v5.0.2 Simplified [en]
- Epson Stylus Photo R320 - CUPS+Gutenprint v5.0.2 [en]
Also, noted problems accessing printer across samba. Problems did not
exist prior to installing 7.04 and using it for about 6 months. Problem
happened shortly after 8.04 came out.
Turning off the printer helps. Selecting the option to "Eject Paper"
from the hardware printer controls has no effect.
