It effectively makes the crashes stop, but I think that the fix solves just the urgent part of the bug. HAL still reports to gnome-power-manager that it can change the brightness, so probably all the related work gets done and simply fails every time with no error. The brightness applet for example still loads fine and tries to change the brightness with no effect. I guess that now the bug becomes: "HAL incorrectly reports brightness changing capability on Dell Latitude laptops with a BIOS password set".
