Did you ever use CPAN to install any perl modules on your system?
I my case _I_think_ that may have been the source of my problem.
I did some locate and find searches and I found I had the sax files in
different locations.
I decided (perhaps not correctly) that those in /usr/local/ were from CPAN
dependency installations.
I did this:
find /usr/local -name *SAX* -exec rm -fR '{}' \;
then I used Synaptic Package manager to completely remove, the other versions
in this order:
libxml-sax-perl
libxml-libxml-perl
libxml-simple-perl
check_gmail
(Those because those were the ones that were giving me problems at the time)
Then I used Synaptic Package manager to reinstall them in the same order.
I have not had the problem since then.
