I encountered this with Alpha2 on a system with an Nvidia MX440. Greeter crashed immediately. Fail safe didn't fail safely. Trying startx didn't work either.
Disabling dri2 in xorg.conf multiple ways (Modules and Device) did not disable it. According to this FedoraForum thread it's a feature: http://forums.fedoraforum.org/forum/showthread.php?t=193698 DId an apt-get update and greeter failed again but eventually got a nice low-res login.
