man hdparm:
-w Perform a device reset (DANGEROUS). Do NOT use this option.
It exists for unlikely situations where a reboot might otherwise be
required to get a confused drive back into a useable state.

Is it really save?

I confirm this bug: when its empty, accidentally my DVD-ROM is going mad, and
there are messages in dmesg:
Jul 21 00:41:09 ivan kernel: [13682.534352] hda: status error: status=0x58 {
DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest }
Jul 21 00:41:09 ivan kernel: [13682.534362] ide: failed opcode was: unknown
And after hundreds of that messages I can not use DVD-ROM. DVD-ROM locks. When
it has CD or DVD inside - that errors do not appear.
