@ Jon Packard: yes, I have Vt-x enabled; and when I disable it I get a kernel panic as well, which ends the same as ANDREA's. I'm running VB 1.6.2 under Hardy. My processor is a C2D T5600. Attached is a dmesg from Intrepid. What looks weird to me is:
